Maureen was an athlete of natural talent who loved to play tough sports games. This interest was combined with the natural ability to perform. She was evident as she took home every Feis for theatre and drama in Ireland. The Abbey Theater was her first choice. Abbey Theater by age 14 and explored her love of performing in classical and opera. Charles Laughton was mesmerized after taking an Maureen screen examination. He was immediately captivated the beautiful eyes she had. Laughton altered the name of Maureen's FitzSimons, from Maureen FitzSimons, to "Maureen O'Hara" it was a shorter form of her first name. It was just before Laughton was able to cast her in Jamaica Inn. Maureen FitzSimons' next film (The Hunchback of Notre Dame 1939) was set to be produced in the studio of RKO Pictures in America under agreement with Laughton. Her contract with Laughton was acquired by RKO following this film became a huge hit. Maureen was 19 when she starred with Laughton in two films.
